Men’s Health Month: Strong Men Prioritize Their Health

6/8/2026

June is Men’s Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the health challenges men face and encouraging preventive care, healthy lifestyle choices, and open conversations about physical and mental well-being.
For many men, especially in Black and Brown communities, health often takes a back seat to work, family responsibilities, and daily demands. Unfortunately, delaying medical care can lead to serious health issues that might have been prevented or managed earlier.

Why Men’s Health Matters
Men are more likely than women to:
  • Delay routine medical checkups
  • Ignore warning signs of illness
  • Experience high blood pressure and heart disease
  • Develop Type 2 diabetes
  • Struggle silently with stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Die from preventable health conditions
The good news is that small, consistent actions can make a significant difference.

Five Important Health Numbers Every Man Should Know
1. Blood PressureHigh blood pressure often has no symptoms but can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.
2. Blood SugarMonitoring blood sugar levels can help detect prediabetes and diabetes early.
3. CholesterolHigh cholesterol can contribute to clogged arteries and cardiovascular disease.
4. Weight and Waist CircumferenceExcess abdominal weight increases the risk of chronic diseases.
5. Kidney FunctionKidney disease is common among people with diabetes and high blood pressure and often goes unnoticed until it becomes severe.

Don't Ignore Mental Health
Strength is not about suffering in silence.
Many men experience:
  • Stress from work and finances
  • Caregiver responsibilities
  • Relationship challenges
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Feelings of isolation and loneliness
Talking with trusted friends, family members, healthcare providers, or support groups can improve both emotional and physical health.

Simple Ways to Improve Your Health
Move More
Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Walking, cycling, dancing, yard work, and strength training all count.

Eat for Your Heart
Choose more:
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Lean proteins
  • Whole grains
  • Healthy fats
Limit:
  • Sugary drinks
  • Excess sodium
  • Processed foods
  • Excessive alcohol
Prioritize Sleep
Most adults need 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night.
Manage Stress
Try:
  • Prayer or meditation
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Journaling
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Connecting with supportive people
The G.U.A.R.D. Method
At Guarded Hearts Wellness, we encourage men to remember:
G – Get regular checkups
U – Understand your numbers
A – Adopt a healthy lifestyle
R – Reduce stress
D – Develop a support system

These simple steps can help protect your heart, improve your quality of life, and support long-term wellness.

Join the Brotherhood Initiative
Men deserve a space where they can learn, grow, and support one another on their wellness journey. The Brotherhood Initiative, powered by Guarded Hearts Wellness, is committed to helping men take charge of their physical, emotional, and spiritual health through education, accountability, and community.

Final Thoughts
Your health is one of your greatest assets. Taking care of yourself is not selfish—it allows you to be present for your family, your community, and your future.

This Men’s Health Month, make a commitment to schedule that appointment, ask questions, learn your numbers, and take one step toward better health.

Because strong men don't ignore their health—they protect it.
